Governors

WELCOME TO COALWAY COMMUNITY INFANT SCHOOL GOVERNORS

The purpose of the Governing Board is to ensure the very best education for our children, which also includes health, well-being and inclusion.

The Governing Board is made up of volunteers who are drawn from parents of pupils at the school, teaching and support staff, members of the community and those nominated by the Local Authority.

Our Governing Board is made up of:

  • 2 Parent Governors – elected by parents

  • 1 Staff Governor – elected by staff

  • 1 Local Authority Governor – nominated by the Local Authority, appointed by the Governing Board

  • 3 Co-opted Governors – appointed by the Governing Board

  • 1 Head Teacher

  • Associate Members – appointed by the Governing Board

The key roles of the Governing Board are to:
  • Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

  • Hold the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff;

  • Oversee the financial performance of the school, making sure its money is well spent.

    The role of Governor is largely a thinking and questioning role, not a doing role. Governors should maintain a strategic view, and not get involved in the day-to-day management and operational responsibilities within school. The Head Teacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the Governing Board.

    The full Governing Board meets regularly throughout the year. You may not meet Governors very often as most of their work takes place in meetings at the end of the school day or “on-line”. Some responsibilities are delegated to the Resources Committee and Link Governors.

    The Resources Committee meets regularly throughout the year and is responsible for:

  • financial planning and monitoring, including setting the annual budget

  • overseeing the appointment of new staff and ensuring that performance management is carried out effectively

  • monitoring all aspects of health and safety

  • maintenance and improvement of the school building and facilities on site

    Link Governors have responsibility for specific areas and undertake school visits to monitor status and progress. These areas include:

  • Children and staff wellbeing

  • Safeguarding and Children in Care

  • SEND and Pupil Premium

  • School Development Plan priority areas

    Vacancies for membership of the Governing Board arise from time to time and can be seen in newsletters and on the website. If you are interested in becoming a Governor or need to contact us for any reason please contact the Clerk to the Governing Board via admin@coalway-inf.gloucs.sch.uk.
