Phonics and Reading

Little Wandle is our systematic synthetic phonics programme. It has been validated by the Department of Education. It is based on the original Letters and Sounds, but extensively revised to provide a complete teaching programme meeting all the expectations of the National Curriculum and preparing your children to go beyond the expectations of the Phonics Screening Check.

How we teach Phonics and reading in Y2?

During the autumn term, Y2 pupils will revisit and revise phase 5 sounds. If some pupils need to continue to catch up with learning the phonics sounds, they will complete a Little Wandle Catch up intervention until they are ready to move on.

Whole class, guided reading teaching units are introduced from Y2. Carefully selected books have been chosen to focus on learning to comprehend the texts. Narrative, non-fiction and poetry are discussed and analysed each term. These sessions also aim to improve the skill of reading aloud.

Supporting your child with reading

Reading is our main priority in school. Alongside this, you can have a huge impact on your child’s reading journey by continuing their practice at home.

Your child will bring home fully decoded reading books which have been correctly matched to your child’s phonic stage. They will continue to re-read these books to increase fluency and independence. Books will continue to be changed once a week alongside monitoring ‘READ’ bookmarks.

There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home. 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised' website
