Phonics and Reading
Following the Government's recent publication of updated essential core criteria for the teaching of early reading, we now follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised' programme which has been validated by the Department of Education. Little Wandle is our new systematic synthetic phonics programme developed by schools for schools. Based on the original Letters and Sounds, but extensively revised to provide a complete teaching programme meeting all the expectations of the National Curriculum and preparing your children to go beyond the expectations of the Phonics Screening Check.
How we teach Phonics in Reception and Year 1:
Supporting your child with reading
Reading is our main priority in school. Alongside this, you can have a huge impact on your child’s reading journey by continuing their practice at home.
Your child will bring home fully decoded reading books which have been correctly matched to your child’s phonic stage. They will continue to re-read these books to increase fluency and independence. Books will continue to be changed once a week alongside monitoring ‘READ’ bookmarks.

There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home. 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised' website
Each class has a designated ‘PE day’ in school and Class 6's is on a Monday. On this day the children will be doing a range of PE activities in the Hall and outdoors as well as exploring the grounds through lots of different activities.
On your child’s PE day we would like your child to come to school dressed in PE kit that is suitable for them to work in both indoors and outside: We suggest joggers/leggings, sweatshirts/hoodies (no slogans please), T-shirt, trainers, a warm, waterproof coat, a hat and gloves. The children may also bring in a pair of wellies to change into that they can keep in school for the term.
